The Water Polo World Cup, which was formerly known as the World League, will consist of the Super Final followed by two qualification rounds for both men and women.
The new model for the World Cup will have two different divisions: “Division 1” will be comprised of the top twelve men’s teams and the top eight women’s teams, while “Division 2” will be available to any team from Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Through two different qualification rounds, a total of six teams from division one and two teams from division two have the opportunity to earn a position in the Super Final.
Brent Nowicki, the Executive Director of FINA, stated that they are certain that the World Cup will bring about exciting new interaction for both teams and fans. This exciting team sport is primed to reach new heights thanks to the new format that will be used for this Water Polo World Cup.
A top focus has been to complete the calendar as quickly as possible so that our teams can begin making plans for their participation. We have maintained constant communication with the leadership of European Aquatics (LEN) to ensure that these dates will not cause severe disruptions to the water polo calendars that are already in place. We are looking forward to making further announcements about the World Cup and the world-class cities that will be hosting the events in the not-too-distant future.”
The following is the Water Polo World Cup schedule for 2023:
Men
- 18-22 April 2023: Qualification Tournament 1
- 2-6 May 2023: Qualification Tournament 2
- 30 June – 2 July 2023: Super Final
Women
- 14-16 April 2023: Qualification Tournament 1
- 28-30 April 2023: Qualification Tournament 2
- 23-25 June 2023: Super Final
The times and locations of the men’s and women’s water polo competitions for players aged 20 and under in 2023 have already been finalized. The competition for the men will take place between the dates of 10-18 June 2023, and the competition for the ladies will take place between the dates of 14-20 August 2023.
FINA is currently examining locations for each of the events, and once they have been confirmed, the host cities will be revealed.
